Dark Horse Bass Strings make a good drain snake!
Yeah… so at my own house, I have a “honey-do list” which involves finishing the basement that I started a few years ago, eventually a kitchen remodel, installing new flooring in the living room and mounds of other things that should get done sooner or later. One of the things on the list is our bathroom sink that has been half clogged for some time now. Since I do this kind of work for a living… it’s pretty hard to be motivated to do it in my own house but today I was experiencing NO DRAINAGE in the sink (ugh) while shaving.
Before I get into the guitar strings part which sounds kind of off the wall just know that the remodeling field is full of running into weird situations where tools and gadgets find other uses than the intended. While shaving, I knew I had to take care of this quick and didn’t feel like sifting through my work truck for a drain snake so I started thinking about what I could use. Keep in mind that smaller drain snakes can be a bugger to work with because getting through the actual p-trap can be a problem (there’s only so much flex with those) and a sink plunger can be problematic with air pushing out through the overflow hole.
Anyway, after doing some quick thinking… I remembered that I recently put some new Dark Horse Strings on my Bass Guitar and the old ones were still around the house. On a side note… Dark Horse Strings are the best I’ve ever played and made locally in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. I usually save those for a backup set in case a string breaks while I’m shredding classic rock tunes like Rush or Motorhead.
Yep, so I grabbed all four strings and pushed the ball ends down into the drain which traveled through the p-trap easily. Spun them around a bit and broke the clog quick! Basically you have 4 mini snakes ripping around the pipe and breaking all the gunk loose.
